Department Spin and Topology in Quantum Materials

Department

The department "Magnetisation Dynamics" (Materials for Green Spintronics  and now: Spin and Topology in Quantum Materials) and its name have a long history dating back to the times of BESSY I. Today, it covers in its in-house research practically all basic phenomena that lay the ground  for a future spintronics and investigate them at various length, time, energy and temperature scales. These are one the one hand exchange-induced effects such as ferromagnetism and on the one hand spin-orbit-induced effects such Rashba effects as well as the combination of both as in magnetic anisotropies.

We investigate these effects by spectrocopy methods in reciprocal space and microscopy methods in real space. Both apply synchrotron radiation with circular polarisation and are able to resolve the electron spin via high-energy Mott scattering.
