Being a doctoral researcher @HZB means being a part of an international scientific organization that provides access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and promotes networking and exchange within the Helmholtz Association and beyond.

HZB recognizes the specific needs and requirements that are part of training doctoral researchers and accordingly developed doctoral guidelines. Central parts are transparent conditions for a good and comprehensive supervision as well as various opportunities to gain key competences. There are numerous scientific and non-scientific qualification offers and additionally several programs are available throughout the year. Doctoral researchers can become a member of one of the subject-specific HZB Research Schools or the Helmholtz International Research Schools. Doing a doctorate @HZB aims to achieve excellent scientific results under the best possible conditions within a reasonable time frame and to promote the personal development of doctoral researchers.

There is the chance to do a doctorate in different fields @HZB. Here you can find our current job offers for doctoral researchers. The doctoral degree is conferred by HZBs partner universities according to their specific regulations. The university is usually chosen based on the affiliation of the main supervisor.

Doctoral researchers carry out a significant part of the research and thus strongly contribute to the centers scientific success. The final goal for doctoral researchers is to prove that they are able to do research independently and according to scientific standards. Doctoral researchers are supported in their journey by the HZB Graduate Center.


HZB Graduate Center

The HZB Graduate Center is the central contact point for all matters related to doing a doctorate @HZB.

The Graduate Center offers a wide range of support for doctoral researchers and their supervisors. It is responsible for the organization of various transferable skill courses specific to the needs of doctoral researchers and cooperates with the scientific supervisors and universities. Furthermore, it continuously advances the program for doctoral researchers @HZB and in doing so is advised by the Scientific Board of the Graduate Center.
