The Helmholtz Energy Materials Characterization Platform (HEMCP)
The Helmholtz Energy Materials Characterization Platform (HEMCP) is designed as an infrastructure platform for the in-depth characterization of novel materials in the area of energy technology. The goal of the project is to closely link the Helmholtz Centres’ activities in the field of materials characterization and thus underpin the scientific foundations in the field of materials research for energy technologies. This is an essential prerequisite for the development of new materials that are necessary to increase the innovation potential of the energy sector in response to the current challenges. Material-based innovations for energy systems are particularly anticipated by means of:
- New electrochemical and catalytically active and thermoelectrical materials
- Novel photovoltaic and photochemical materials systems
- Optimized ceramic-based composites and new metallic alloys for the highest thermomechanical loading conditions
- Improved functional layer systems and surface modifications
The participating Helmholtz centers include Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Forschungszentrum Jülich, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) and DESY. The Institute for Nanospectroscopy is actively involved in the synchrotron-based materials characterization, in particular at the EMIL at BESSY II infrastructure.
