Sample Preparation Lab

The sample preparation laboratory suite offers efficient tools to characterize samples and provides precise methods to prepare materials for further investigations. This laboratory offers analytical methods to determine chemical compositions and structures as well the orientation of and quality of single crystals. The methods of the sample preparation laboratory can be applied for all types of materials and practically any sample shape.

Powder materials can be analyzed by thermogravimetric methods and by x-ray powder diffraction (Bruker D8). For single crystal orientation a fast and flexible Laue apparatus (employing Photonic Science Backscattering Camera) is available. Oriented samples can be directly transfered to a precision wire saw and a polisher to prepare oriented surfaces with high accuracy. Optical microscopy complements these methods. We can also handle sensitive materials using glove boxes.

The instruments are accessible for HZB scientists as well as for visiting scientists at HZB. Users will be trained by staff of the institute QM-IQM to be able to conduct experiments independently. Please contact the lab responsible. If you wish to use the Laue Camera or the Bruker D8, please register with the Radiation Protection Department of HZB. External users may use the prefilled form listed in the box on the right.
