Young Investigator Group Magnons: X-rays and Models
Our main goal is to study magnetic excitations, their interaction with the orbital, charge and lattice degrees of freedom and their ultrafast dynamics. Of particular interest are antiferromagnetic and altermagnetic materials that host high-energy THz magnetic excitations and can be grown in layered atomically thin films with tunable properties.
Our experimental toolkit is based on advanced X-ray spectroscopies such as X-ray Magnetic Dichroism and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering performed at synchrotrons and X-ray free-electron lasers. We develop new sample environments and experiments to study the proposagation of magnetic excitations and the angular momentum transfer between the spin and the crystal lattice that sustains the excitation. Finally, to interpret our data, we perform theoretical calculations based on multiplet and DFT methods to understand the underlying mechanisms dictating the properties of these systems.
