Abstract:
The contribution of solar energy to the electricity supply is continuously increasing as nations strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming. Hydrogen generated from electrochemical devices, primarily electrolyzers, could help to balance the mismatch between the supply of, and demand for electricity generated by naturally variable solar energy. This chapter describes the technological aspects, current state of the art and future trends for photovoltaic integrated electrolysis. It also highlights the requirements for this technology to displace conventional power plants namely, terawatt deployment, cost reductions, higher energy conversion efficiencies and longer service lifetime.
