Abstract:
We characterize the Spin Reorientation Transition (SRT) in ultra-thin Co films grown in situ on a Au layer prepared on a W(110) single crystal by varying the thickness of the Co film and the thickness of Au capping layer. We present in a novel phase dia-gram of the magnetic response of these in-situ prepared samples that reveals distinct differences to related samples prepared ex situ. Our data indicate that the local environment around the Co atom is different from the growth of Co on single crystalline Au(111), and that this structural difference is indeed of relevance for the magnetism. Further EXAFS calculations based on state of the art codes will provide further structural details.
