Abstract:
The interdiffusion coefficients in AlNiCe melts with a mean composition of Al77Ni20Ce3 and Al87Ni10Ce3 have been measured at 1373 and 1273 K, respectively. The used method was the long-capillary technique. The diffusion profiles were analyzed after solidification by means of energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The thermodynamic factors were calculated from chemical potential data. The approach of Darken¿s concept, to combine linearly the diffusive flux with the gradient of the chemical potential, was invoked in order to study the influence of thermodynamic forces on diffusion in metallic multicomponent melts.
