Innovation Lab HySPRINT

Nanophotonics for Solar Energy 17.10.2018

Chairs: Prof. Dr. Christiane Becker (HZB), Dr. Sven Burger (ZIB), Dr. Klaus Jäger (HZB)

In the Second European Workshop Nanophotonics for Solar Energy we review recent developments and reflect on the current role of nanophotonics for solar cells. We would like to discuss strategies for maximising the impact of nanophotonics on future developments in solar energy technology. The workshop is organized by the Berlin Joint Lab for Optical Simulations for Energy Research (BerOSE) and the Helmholtz Innovation Lab HySPRINT. We encourage the participants to not only present their latest results but also to address problems and open questions – this might help to identify possible topics for collaboration. Further, the workshop will be a platform for exchange between industry and academia.

Workshop Venue

The workshop takes place in the WISTA building in Berlin-Adlershof, in the very Southeast of Berlin. The Berlin Adlershof Science City is one of the most successful high-technology locations in Germany.

You probably will arrive in Adlershof at the S-Bahn stop, from there you can walk to WISTA in about 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can take Tram 61 or 63 or Bus 162 or 164 from S-Adlershof to Walther-Nernst-Str. (1 stops) and then walk Southeast on Rudower Chaussee until you see WISTA on the Left.

The Workshop Dinner will take place on Tuesday, 16 October 2018, in Restaurant Rio Grande in Berlin-Kreuzberg. This restaurant is situated directly next to River Spree, very close the Oberbaumbrücke and just opposite the East Side Gallery, which is one of the largest remaining sections of the Berlin Wall.

The Dinner is free for the workshop participants. Please contact us if you would like to bring someone with you.

The registration for the dinner is now closed. Please contact Dr Klaus Jäger for any questions.

Getting to Adlershof / BESSY II

For all connections an “AB ticket” is required, except when travelling from/to SXF airport (see below).

  • Arriving by plane:

Berlin currently has two airports: Berlin Schönefeld Airport (SXF) is located in the Southeast, just outside the Berlin city limit. Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) is in the Northwest of Berlin and much further away from Adlershof.

From Schönefeld Airport take S-Bahn lines S9 or S45 to Adlershof or bus line 164 to Walther-Nernst-Str. The total travel time to WISTA is about 25 – 30 minutes. Travelling from SXF to Adlershof requires a ticket for BC zones. Travelling from SFX to the city centre requires an ABC ticket.

From Tegel Airport take Bus TXL to Beusselstraße and then S-Bahn S41 to Ostkreuz, where you change to S8, S85, or S9 (same track as S41) to Adlershof. This journey takes about 1:10 hour.
  • Arriving by train:

If your train stops at Berlin Südkreuz, get off there. Then take S-Bahn S45 or S46 to Adlershof. This journey takes about 35 minutes.

If your train stops at Berlin Ostbahnhof, get off there. Then S-Bahn S9 to Adlershof. The journey to WISTA takes about 30 minutes.

From Berlin Hauptbahnhof (less convenient than the other options), take S-Bahn S9 to Adlershof. The journey to WISTA takes about 45 minutes.

Accommodation

As Berlin is the largest German city, you can choose between countless options for accommodation. We will recommend two places in Adlershof, which however is at the outskirts of Berlin.

Another option is to stay in the centre; e.g. close to Restaurant Rio Grande, where the Workshop Dinner will take place (see below). If you have any questions about where to stay or where not to stay, please do not hesitate to contact Klaus Jäger (klaus.jaeger@helmholtz-berlin.de).

To check, how long it would take from a certain hotel to BESSY II, use the Journey Planner from BVG http://www.bvg.de/en/.
