Aim of the school is to train participants in various X-ray diffraction methods for applying them in current scientific projects.

The Rietveld school will cover the general treatment of powder diffraction patterns, Le Bail refinement for lattice parameter determination, Rietveld analysis, sequential refinement, and microstructure analysis.
Please note that the Rietveld school is dedicated to advanced diffraction users. Solid knowledge of crystallography and diffraction methods is a prerequisite.

From the 2020 workshop:
The 2020  workshop focuses on both experimental and theoretical projects: Adding the dimension of time to the selectivity of X-rays is bringing new impetus to many longstanding scientific questions. The ability to distinguish atomic constituents and their properties, to capture transient states of matter, and to follow electronic and structural dynamics on elemental time and length scales, gives a fresh look at functionality. In particular, the coupling of different degrees of freedom, dynamic pathways in multidimensional landscapes are addressed in relation to chemical dynamics. We intentionally cross the boundaries of physics, chemistry, and materials science and focus on the unifying aspects of function in the light of X-ray matter interaction – with implications from fundamentals to experimental approaches.

The program is aimed primarily at master students and other early stage researchers in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and life or environmental sciences. Students will be introduced to advanced synchrotron- and laboratory-based photon science methods that probe the physical, chemical, and electronic structures of materials as well as the function and dynamics of complex material systems.

General and specialized lectures will be delivered by experienced teachers who are HZB scientists or BESSY II “super-users” from our partner universities and research centers.

From the 2021 Summer School:
The Summer School targets both “beginners” and the “experienced”. It will serve both groups with dedicated sessions. Therefore, the format is adapted as follows:
A preparation day on the Friday – preceding the actual Summer School week! – is mandatory for everybody, to familiarize everybody with the toolbox utilized during the Summer School and in order to provide an effective learning environment for everybody.
The experienced groups will start with two days filled with a mixture of lectures, keynotes and a thorough introduction into their hackathon project. The introduction will be followed by three full days diving deep into their hackathon project.
The beginners groups will participate in a four-day lecture series on machine learning basics, including techniques of deep learning and reinforcement learning, effectively combined with hands-on tutorials. Participants will be given the opportunity to develop a "hands-on AI method competence".

State-of-the-Art, Challenges, Examples, Future Prospects.

The growing interest in, e.g. new energy conversion and storage systems drives the fast development of new analytical techniques that allow for in-situ and operando characterization of electrochemical interfaces to gain atomic-level understanding of underlying processes in devices including batteries, fuel cells, water electrolyzers, supercapacitors, etc. The workshop aims at bringing together scientists who are interested in fundamental processes occurring at the interfaces and in the bulk of electrode and electrolyte materials and provides interdisciplinary education to PhD students.
