European Users Consortium Heisenberg RIXS

The European Free Electron Laser XFEL.EU will deliver ultra-short x-ray pulses with unique average brightness starting 2015. It is hence particularly interesting for photon hungry experiments like (time-resolved) resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS). An international consortium headed by Prof. Alexander Föhlisch has formed to use the new scientific possibilities at XFEL.EU to push RIXS to the ultimate limit given by the uncertainty principle connecting temporal and energy resolution. The consortium is planning to design and construct a station for high-resolution RIXS with variable momentum transfer at the SCS station of the XFEL.EU. The instrument will provide a flexible sample environment suited for solid as well as liquid and gaseous samples. A complementary station for static momentum-resolved RIXS experiments is planned to be installed at BESSY II.
